Skiing in West Virginia
Skiing in West Virginia With its high amount of snowfall and long ski season, West Virginia is one great Skiing destination.

In West Virginia, the parks and ski areas have sled and inner tube runs and rope tow, as well as snow – groomer tours, snowmobiles, and snow body board sleds. Each resort allows Snowboarding on all slopes. For snowshoe trekkers, popular destinations are Monongahela National Forest and state parks as well as the West Virginia's pristine snow – covered forests. Also, outfitters provide guided tours, equipment rentals, and lessons for those who want to explore miles of hiking trails blanketed by snow.

West Virginia also offers winter sport options from major commercial resorts with massive ski lifts. These resorts are:
  • Winterplace Resort - has 28 trails and a terrain park. The different ski lifts here are fun to get a ride with and have the greatest attitude difference of 89 miles. This resort gets eight (8) feet of snow every winter which results to great coverage. It has 27 slopes and its skiing land which is 90 acres is just like a small – sized ski mountain.

  • Timberline Resort - nestles at an elevation of over 4,000 feet. It receives abundant snowfall, and it has a snowmaking system. The upper white lightning trail has been widened to allow skiers make turns with today’s shaped Skis.

  • Canaan Valley Resort - became the first major commercial downhill ski operator in West Virginia. It is a complete winter playland that adds attractions and services for skiers. It offers a 250-room lodge and 23 mountain cottages as well as dining options and many special events.

  • Snowshoe Mountain Resort - has a detachable quad lift known as the Soaring Eagle Express which allows skiers more time for turns as it reduces the ride time. This resort also has village on top that has restaurants and areas for shoppers and those who want to have a drink or two at night.

  • Oglebay Resort - features 815-ft. slopes with a 168-ft. vertical drop, a new triple chair lift, and extensive snowmaking equipment.
